Captioning Resources

ADDING LIVE CAPTIONS TO YOUR MEETINGS AND PRESENTATIONS

Captioning your lectures, workshops, meetings, etc., can make your presentations more accessible to many individuals and adding live captions to your presentations may be something you are interested in exploring.

Several applications are adding options for live captioning.  This option can provide a great resource to presenters and participants.  It is important to note: live captioning is not 100% accurate and accuracy is a critical component of captioning.

**You cannot fully rely on live captioning to accurately relay your message and should always provide a transcript or work with a captioning service or caption your presentation for complete accuracy.**

However, for those who are interested in ensuring live captioning is available, many types of options are available to explore.

Highlighted below are four options: Powerpoint and Google Slides, Microsoft Teams, Google Meets, and Zoom.

Note the following:

  1. PowerPoint will only live caption for the individual presenting.  This is not a good tool for meetings.
  2. Google Slides will only live caption for the individual presenting.  This is not a good tool for meetings.
  3. Teams will only show captions for those who turn the captions on. This could be a good tool for meetings. Currently, live caption is only available for the downloaded application. Updates occur regularly. This may change.
  4. Google Meets will live caption for all who participate in the meeting. This could be a good tool for meetings.

Included below are short tutorials on how to turn on the live captioning for each application.

Additional Information

Adding Captions to Zoom

In order to provide Closed Captioning to a Zoom recording, you can enable the Automatic Zoom Recording to Upload to Kaltura for Instructional Video in CatCourses. The video recording will be machine captioned automatically.  This is only available after recording the zoom meeting/workshop/lecture (not as live captioning as the class or meeting is occurring).  Please note: the accuracy is about 80 percent.
